Account passwords on ALICE

This page provides information on password requirements on ALICE and how you can change your password.

Account password

Passwords on ALICE are:

  • valid for 180 days

  • have minimum of 12 characters in length

  • characters from all four classes, i.e., lower case, upper case, digits and other characters

  • the same password cannot be used twice in one row

Never use a password that you have already been using for another account or service. For example, do not use the same password on ALICE that you are using for your ULCN account.

Never give your login credentials for ALICE to someone else

Changing your password

You can change your password by logging in to one of the login nodes and running the command passwd in the terminal.

If you are using X2Go or RDP, please open a terminal first and then type in passwd.

You will be asked to type in your current password after which you can type in you new password. You will have to confirm your new password a second time.

The new password always have to meet the password requirements on ALICE.

Even if you are using ssh keys to access ALICE, you will have to change your password. Otherwise, you will not be able to login

Password expiration

Passwords are valid for 180 days. You will be notified in advance when your password expires.

If you do not change your password in time, you will not be able to login to ALICE anymore. You can request a new password by contacting the ALICE Helpdesk.
