About this wiki

This wiki provides information about the Research Drive instance hosted by SURF and used by Leiden University.

There are two main sources of information:

  • Wiki provided by SURF with general information about how Research Drive works.

  • Wiki provided by Leiden University (this wiki) that addresses matters specific to Leiden University or additional information not provided on the SURF wiki.

We do our best to maintain consistency between these two wikis.

What is Research Drive?

In short, Research Drive is a cloud environment where research projects and teams can store and share data during the active research phase.

You can compare Research Drive to Google Drive or DropBox, but it is intended to be used by research groups and projects.

  • Files are stored in the cloud, can be shared and collaboratively edited

  • Data are stored in the Netherlands (backed-up weekly)

  • Research Drive is shared storage (for a group or project) - data will always be part of a group/project and remain accessible, even when group/project members leave or permissions are changed

  • Several integrations exist with other applications and environments (SURF HPC clusters, Jupyter Hub, HPC cloud, OwnCloud, OnlyOffice, etc.).

Research Drive is not meant for:

  • personal usage (work-related or private matters)

  • long-term storage (archiving) of research data

  • publishing of research data

  • heavy-duty data analysis
